Forge World - Iron Hands - Iron Father

This is a really nice sculpt, the groin protector was on a massive sprue so it snapped off of course..
Apart from that, no complaints really overall a good model to assemble and paint.
I decided to go for Forge Worlds own painting guide with a slight twist.
For what is effectively a black model, it is somewhat more complicated than it may look!

Undercoated black, then i used Humbrol Metal cote to lightly work up the highlights towards the edges and raised areas.
The whole model was then airbrushed with Tamiya smoke with a tiny bit of Tamiya clear yellow mixed in, it gives a kind of oily sheen.
After he dried, i airbrushed Druchi violet wash in random spots here and there, aiming mostly for the larger plate areas.
Next i airbrushed thinned Tamiya clear green over the other colours.
After drying, i then airbrushed more Tamiya smoke over the whole model.
Then i varnished him with Vallejo matt varnish.

The brass parts i used old Citadel Beaten copper mixed with boltgun metal, washed with Agrax earth shade and then highlighted with beaten copper in "striking motions to create a chipped and weathered apperance" - not my words!

The face was painted in my own style, most painters have their own tech and colours. Mine is mostly bleached bone, with a mud brown wash and some violet wash. Highlighted with bleached bone and Vallejo white.

I am waiting for the decal set from Forge World - hence the lack of icons.

I magnetized the servo arm so it can be repositioned, it also protects it from breakage.

I am working on some more Iron Hands marines - will share here when there is more progress!
Thanks for reading (:

Citadel SQUIGS - old white metal miniatures!

I love these old cave squigs! I painted them some time ago, figured i would share their snappy cool with any readers!

Cave Squigs are found far beneath the Worlds Edge Mountains. They are improbable creatures - part fungus, part flesh, and with gaping maws dominated by row upon row of dagger-like teeth. Although they are wild and dangerous creatures, it is possible to herd them towards the enemy by means of pitchforks, firebrands and the beating of loud drums.

Cave Squigs will be a lively and unpredictable addition to your army. You might find them even more useful when they're herded up together by Night Goblins and pointed in the direction of your enemy, where they can chomp into their units with devastating results.

The figures are now available in resin from GW, they look to be the same sculpts. These are the OOP 90's metal minis. I went for a cartoony look, i was at the time obsessed with the awesome painting of Massimo Colombari in white dwarf 152. His pastel yet vibrant colours were and are still a great inspiration! - i hope these are a decent tribute! I am aware they are nowhere near as good!

Space Marines - Ultramarines - The greatest of them all.

Well, having watched Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie - i decided i should put some focus on these galactic smurfs some more.
I started painting the Ultramarine chapter back in the early 90's, - even then the beaky corvus armour was quirky and "old skool" - these were always my favourites. I have a LOAD of these to paint up, lots of variants etc, exo terminator armour figures - some real gems.

Recently picking up an airbrush my approach to painting has changed significantly. In the brush wielding past the idea of painting multiple vehicles and large numbers would break me out in a cold sweat. After some issues initially - (airbrushing has a steep learning curve) i am now becoming more competent and i actually LOOK FORWARD to the larger projects!

Currently i have some "reclaimed" 40k vehicles so i thought i would start with a 10 man tactical squad and a rhino, in the background there is an  original Land Raider - rogue trader era. I gave it some severe weathering and mud effects!
I used Vallejo grey for the base coats, then painted all Ultramarines in Vallejo blue, shaded with Signal blue and highlighted with firstly blue and white and then light sea blue for the final highlights. Textured sand is added to the vehicles, and some drybrushing and wear effects - the tactical arrow is hand painted and the transfers are applied using micro sol and set. Some Tamiya smoke has been used as a wash, and some good old chestnut ink from GW's glorious past.... I worry about my half full pot and when it ends... What will replace this liquid gold? lol.

I will post some pics of the finished Land Raider soon, in the meanwhile....

The Ultramarines man a roadblock vigilantly. Kill the heretics!

Marauder Flagellants MM65

These old Marauder empire flagellants are great minis, i have been meaning to get round to painting these guys for some time. Flagellants are crazed zealots, religious fanatics who care little for their own well being. I figure they would have a religious colour scheme - ie white but would be covered in blood and cuts as if there are no enemies to flaggell! (is that a word?) then they'll flag themselves!

I used Vallejo model air base grey and added progressively more white to the highlights on the main cloaks, i think this leaves a great effect especially in contrast to the gore and blood, applied using the awesome Tamiya clear red paint with a touch of black ink!

Came back to these in 2017 and I think I rushed all my painting back then (2014) - These are fucking awful. I have tried to tidy them up a bit. Check the pic below.
